Network Viz

Network Viz

For this project we wanted to analyze the disinformation campaigns of Russia and Iran. We did so by looking at tweets and accounts that have been flagged by Twitter as being state operated disinformation tweets/accounts by Russia and Iran. In the following visualizations, we wanted to identify the target audiences of Russia and Iran’s disinformation campaigns by analyzing the languages that the tweets were sent in.

The following network visualization shows the language audiences that have been targeted by Russia and Iran. The blue nodes are the language groups, and they have been sized according to how many tweets were received in both languages. The orange nodes are the state actors. The edges that connect the states to the languages are colored by how many tweets were sent from that state actor in that language. You can mouseover any of the nodes to view more information, as well as drag and zoom the plot.

The following tree map is essentially a different representation of the same data. The size and color of the boxes correlate to the amount of tweets sent by each state actor in that language. You can hover over any of the boxes to view more information.

The following bubble plot shows the total amount of tweets by both Russia and Iran sent in each language. You can mouseover each bubble to see the total number of tweets as well as the language name.

The following gallery shows the different design iterations I made when creating the network plots.
