Texas Midterms

I studied the 2018 Texas midterm senatorial race between Beto O’Rourke and Ted Cruz.

This shows how Republican or Democrat each county in Texas voted.

This shows the percentage turnout per county. Redder colors indicate higher percentage turnout in that counter, yellower colors indicate lower percentage turnout in that county.

Given that Beto O’Rourke only lost by 2.6 percent, I think that if the blue counties in the bottom left had higher turnout, Beto would’ve won.

A comparison of the electorate v the state as a whole

The “Racial Demographics of Texas” pie chart are the state’s actual racial demographics. The “Racial Demographics of Texas Electorate” are the racial demographics of the people who actually voted.

Under/over Representation in the Texas Electorate

This shows the percentage disparity between how accurately represented in the electorate. If the ethnic makeup of the electorate was the same as the actual ethnic makeup of Texas, all of the bars would be at 0. This charts shows that Hispanics are 17% underrepresented in the Texas electorate.
